Picture this: Cliff jumping in a natural spring outside of El Yunque; snorkeling at Culebra and a day trip to one of the best beaches in the world. Are you sold yet? I was. My first trip to Puerto Rico happened in 2021. It was my then-boyfriend’s (now fiancé) and my first vacation out of the COVID-19 pandemic, and neither of us had been before. Returning there nearly one year later, it’s become even more clear how special of a place the island is. Just four hours from Boston (sometimes five depending on the airline), Puerto Rico immediately impresses with lush green rainforests and sparkling blue water—truly the perfect couple’s escape from the winter cold or humid summer. But like any vacation, where your stay can influence your entire trip. About 10 minutes away from the Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport sits Fairmont El San Juan Hotel.
The newly renovated resort serves as the perfect luxury destination thanks to multiple on-site pools, beach cabanas, oceanfront views, nine onsite restaurants and a breathtaking spa. Plus—endless connections to tours, hikes, snorkeling and more in the area, as well as on-site live entertainment and a club. While the family-friendly hotel is perfect to slip away for any type of R&R, its packaging for couples truly impresses. For my return, there was special “Congratulations” signage in our room (we get married next month) and other meticulous details that the team put in place—think champagne, beach cabanas and a romantic dinner at Riva.
Earlier this month, it was an opportunity for those attending the MasterCard Jazz Fest 2023. Those staying at the hotel who attended the three-night festival were delighted with even more live entertainment in The Lobby of the Fairmont, as well as daily breakfast for two at on-resort restaurant Caña, a bottle of Cava and two complimentary tickets to one of the Jazz Fest shows.
But for future trips, it’s a variety of options. Think spa and wellness amenities at the forefront with a three-night stay (two at the Fairmont and one at the Hacienda), including a morning yoga session on Isla Verde Beach, private helicopter ride, coffee tour and picnic lunch. A 90-minute couples massage and private dinner by executive chef Ricardo Cera concludes the offering. Another package gives couples more privacy at the resort’s private, two-level villa Casa De Mar, which also features two terraces and a hot tub, as well as daily room service breakfast for two. The views from the beachfront villa are sure to create countless memories. And if that still isn’t enough, go the extra mile. A private catamaran sunset sail with Champagne will only add fire to the flame.
