Harvard Law School student Logan Brown solved her own sartorial dilemma earlier this year when she launched Spencer Jane (spencerjane.com). The emerging womenswear label is built around Brown’s take on the classic blazer. Here, Brown talks about building a brand in between her studies.
What inspired you to start Spencer Jane? During my first year at Harvard Law School, I went shopping in search of a pantsuit for legal internship interviews. I couldn’t find anything that made me feel comfortable, so I texted my friends for suggestions. They echoed my disdain. Initially, I was going to write a blog post about the time women spend searching for professional clothing. Instead, I created a survey and distributed it to over 2,000 women. After seeing the results, I decided to use the information and create Spencer Jane.
The brand is centered around the Ultimate Work-From- Home Blazer.Tell us about what makes it different. It’s made with a luxury Italian performance fabric that is stretchy and designed to move. It’s also wrinkle-resistant. The single button was designed to flatter all figures and create an hourglass silhouette. We use the same factory as Gucci and Moncler to provide luxury without the cost.
You also support women’s organizations through Spencer Jane. It’s more than a blazer—it’s a movement. We have partnered up with universities to donate a portion of sales to support scholarships and funds to women. We also regularly donate blazers to women in need.
What’s next? We’re launching a shirt, dress and pants in the fall. We’re also building some exciting brand partnerships and community programming events. I have no idea what the world is going to look like in the future or how the nature of work will change. I do know that women will be at the forefront and I want Spencer Jane to serve them.
