This month marks a new season in the city—one that will be filled with an abundance of openings, performances and good eats. The Victoria Egg's Mother’s Day collection
TEA
Ever since the Prince and Princess of Wales visited Boston in November, it seems that the royals are all the rage. So why not dine like the Brits with an afternoon tea? Hosted at The Bee’s Knees British Imports (thebeeskneesbritishimports.com) in Acton, the event is set to take place March 18 from 2 to 4PM in honor of the United Kingdom’s Mother’s Day. “In England, the answer to any crisis is, ‘Let’s put the kettle on and have a cup of tea.’ ... We don’t need a crisis to have tea, though,” says Lucinda Sears, co-owner of the shop. Th ose who attend can expect to pick from multiple types of tea, as well as sausage rolls, fairy cakes, scones, biscuits and more. Plus, peruse the brand-new collection from British designer Victoria Egg's, released just in time for the holiday.
The shop includes a design touch by New York’s Gala Magriñá, who is also behind the Tie Bar, Uniqlo and Gant showrooms.
SHOP
What do Debra Messing, Grant Hughes and Lisa Ling all have in common? They’re all fans of SuitShop (suitshop.com). Known for its Eco Stretch fabric, the sustainable, gender-inclusive suit brand is opening a fourth location in Boston this month. “Having called Boston home for many years, opening a store on Newbury Street was a dream that we finally got to make real,” says Diana Ganz, who founded the brand with Jeanne Foley in 2016. “Th is personal connection makes our Boston showroom the perfect venue to debut SuitShop’s new design too. More than just a fresh look, this upgrade offers a reinvented, truly fun shopping experience.” In one area of the space, find checkered floors, disco balls and a bright color palette.
INDULGE
Apple fritter, honey-dipped, buttermilk-glazed and cinnamon sugar are only a few of the flavors offered at Martha’s Vineyard’s Back Door Donuts (backdoordonuts.com)—and now, sugar fiends can enjoy them at a brand-new Fenway pop-up this month. “Our loyal fans who know us from Martha’s Vineyard and doughnut enthusiasts will be able to get a taste of what makes us so special for a limited time,” says Vincent Lombardi, senior vice president of operations for The Lyons Group. Peruse the menu and order a dozen (or two) from the takeout window at Loretta’s Last Call on Lansdowne Street.
Hutker Architects’ new Beacon Hill studio
DESIGN
“We have been really excited and grateful to create an opportunity for our team to be a part of the fabric of this city and be involved in the design conversation here,” says senior associate Ryan Alcaidinho of Hutker Architects’ (hutkerarchitects.com) new Beacon Hill studio. The renowned architecture firm, which just celebrated 35 years in 2022, has won multiple awards for its projects, including PRISM and AIA. “A lot of people don’t even realize that a lot of our work is now stretching to Connecticut, New York, Maine and Vermont,” Alcaidinho explains. “So bringing that full circle and being able to come into the city is pretty important and felt like this was the moment for us.” Located at 14 Beacon St. in Ste. 702, the new studio houses two private offices, collaboration spaces and individual work stations within 2,300 square feet—ensuring the utmost quality of design of the staple firm that we’ve all come to love. Jim Cappuccino, partner at the firm, adds, “We appreciate the support and warm welcome we’ve received in celebrating this moment for our firm.”
Keep an eye out on the bookstore’s calendar for high-profile author meet-and-greets including Ken Fulk, Diane von Furstenberg and Jenny Slate.
READ
There’s a handful of coveted local bookstores within the city, but as of this month, readers can add another one to their list: East End Books (eastendbooksptown.com). “We’re thrilled to bring a full-service bookstore to Pier 4 and the vibrant Boston Seaport area,” says the owner, Jeff Peters, who first opened the bookstore in Provincetown in 2015. The new location is set to open in Seaport with a curation of reads, including audiobooks, vinyl albums, magazines, gifts and, of course, coffee and tea to help digest every word.
EAT
Brisk air, snowy mountaintops and deeply delicious eats create the perfect weekend at The Lodge at Spruce Peak (sprucepeak.com). And thanks to the Winter Guest Chef Series, guests can have it all. “Our Winter Guest Chef Series gives our guests a unique opportunity to experience an intimate night of dining with alums of our flagship A Taste of New England event,” explains Sean Blomgren, executive chef at the resort. The series, which started in January, has successfully featured a variety of well-known names like chef David Vargas of Vida Cantina and chef Brendan Vesey of Botanica Restaurant & Gin Bar. Up next: Will Gilson from Cambridge’s Puritan & Co. Blomgren adds, “These types of food and drink events held year-round set Spruce Peak apart and make it a true culinary destination.” And we couldn’t agree more.
