GIVING
Last Thanksgiving, Rescuing Leftover Cuisine (RLC, rescuingleftovercuisine.org) donated 2,400 pounds of food for those in need. This year, the nonprofit is launching its Gratitude Week program where volunteers and food donors have the opportunity to help redistribute 5,000 meals to the community. RLC is searching for neighboring businesses to donate any surplus food they may have to their local organization partnerships, along with any community members who would like to help transport food to those who need it. “Up to 40% of food is unnecessarily wasted in the United States, accounting for the single largest category of material occupying municipal landfills,” says Director of Partnerships Dana Siles. “Volunteering as a rescuer for about one hour rescues an average of 40 pounds of food, comprising 33 meals and producing tangible impact—as well as an immediate feeling of fulfillment and accomplishment!”
