"I always loved fragrance,” says award-winning actress Michelle Pfeiffer. “I remember sneaking into my neighbor’s yard when I was really young and standing under their night-blooming jasmine. It was so intoxicating to me. I would also bring roses home and crush them up, trying to make perfume. I guess that was my first attempt at perfumery.”
Yet, when Pfeiffer, who stars in next month’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, became a mom, she started looking at labels and gave up wearing fragrances—she didn’t want to expose her children to anything potentially toxic. Now, she launches a clean alternative to traditional scents, Henry Rose. “I wanted to create a line of genderless fine fragrances that prove you don’t need to sacrifice quality over safety,” she explains. “Fragrance was always really personal to me, and I missed wearing it.” After years of research and work developing a short list of safe ingredients, Pfeiffer developed five scents with her team of IFF perfumers. “I realized that if I wanted to find a beautiful, fine fragrance that was also safer to wear, then there were likely others looking for the same thing, so I had to create it myself,” she shares.
Each of the scents is inspired by different memories from Pfeiffer’s life. “Fog reminds me of summer in San Francisco. Jake’s House reminds me of my grandparent’s house in North Dakota. They all bring me back to something, which is a testament of how strongly scent is tied to memory,” she says. So which fragrance does the iconic beauty wear herself? “Torn was the first one I developed and my favorite, so it’s my go-to, but I love to layer all of the scents.
