Weekend Max Mara teamed with American artist Richard Saja to launch Trophy Day, a capsule collection inspired by the legendary Royal Ascot races. The line, which merges Saja’s affinity for layering intricate embroidery over historical textiles with Max Mara’s clean and feminine shapes, creates an updated take on the legendary sporting event’s stern dress code and, when deconstructed, gives way to perfect summer wardrobe staples. “I tried to capture the essence of a holiday every day: fun and frivolity rippling through the prints [via] the color and texture in the embroidery,” the artist says. The result is overtly sweet silhouettes such as silk and cotton Peter Pan collar dresses and cropped bolero jackets rendered in toile de Jouy prints embroidered with contrasting threads to fashion a 3-D quality unique to each item produced. The standouts, though, are the accessories. With only one shoe and one bag style—a refined slide loafer and an oversize vintage-style clasp bag, respectively—they feel not only festive for a day at the races, but even more practical as warm-weather essentials.
