Designer Liz Hostetter melds fashion and tech with her women’s clothing line, Ellie Kai.
Hold onto your seams: Fashion designer Liz Hostettoer is blazing trails with her innovative approach to shopping experience. Hostetter, a former expat (of 23 years) and current South End resident, has created a multimillion-dollar business model with her brand Ellie Kai, which allows women to customize their wardrobes with made-to-order garments (from $100) that are shipped direct in less than three weeks. “We are uniquely positioned to operate on a synergistic online-off line platform,” Hostetter says. The biggest draw is Kai’s Fit Kit, a playbook to help customers find the right size throughout the seasons. Customers also work directly with style consultants. “Our client is busy, appreciates personalization, wants to share her opinion and offer feedback,” Hostetter says. “She is ethically conscious and cares about where her clothes are made. Her expectations around the consumer experience have become more demanding.” This summer, shoppers can expect gorgeous, vibrant palettes and colorful prints. Be sure to check out the Y-Halter silhouette, which is available as a top, as well as cocktail and maxidresses, and the Linda dress, which is a must-have for summer thanks to its breezy style. “I have yet to meet a client who is excited about ironing or dry cleaning, especially over the summer when traveling,” says Hostetter with a laugh. “I am a big believer in fabrics that have an incredible handfeel, drape beautifully and are easy to care for, and I know this resonates with all of our customers.”
