Our childhood bedrooms never leave us—why not design a space that whisks the littles into a whimsical daydream? This dreamy bedroom features a custom bunk bed by Arniko Woodworks.
STARRY NIGHT
Imagine glancing up at the night sky while slipping into a deep slumber. Every night ends this way in Kathryn Hufton’s intricately designed children’s room. “It feels like a dream and is the perfect escape for kids to unwind, get lost in a good book or just a quiet space to complete homework,” says the owner of Kathryn Hufton Design (kathrynhuftondesign.com). A whimsical and timeless ambiance is coupled with functionality, inviting the children into deep blue custom bunks. Cole & Son’s woodland and starlight wallpaper in midnight blue envelops the room, adorned with a Landry & Arcari rug and a hanging star lantern from Visual Comfort. When curling up with their favorite tale, the kiddies can choose between a fluffy Ballard Designs pouf and a plush window seat wrapped in bespoke Ferran Textiles fabric.
A McLaren Formula 1 racing print graces the wall of the bedroom.
SENSE OF STYLE
As a child, designing your bedroom feels like an episode of MTV Cribs. Few kids are awarded this opportunity, which made it a rare and fun experience for Christine Tuttle of Christine Tuttle Design (christinetuttle.com). “The parents wanted a modern feel overall, but they gave the children approval over fabrics and colors,” says Tuttle. “They were our easiest clients ever!” Red and blue details are splashed across the tween’s room, from a custom Roman shade with red Samuel & Sons trimming to the bespoke Kravet navy blue lamp. A Duc Duc trundle bed with blue Garnet Hill bedding and mixed Kravet pillows serves as a centerpiece, while a leather Cisco Home pouf completes the space.
The room’s soft carpet adds a cozy touch.
ONCE UPON A DREAM
Everyone knows what a lullaby sounds like, but what does it look like? When bringing a young family’s home into the modern era, Emily Healy of Healy Interiors (healyinteriors.com) designed a little one’s room that personifies a peaceful and harmonious melody. “The inspiration for the children’s room was simply to create a dreamy space that nurtures creativity while still providing a sense of calm,” notes Healy, who worked on the project with David Boronkay of Slocum Hall Design Group. Naptime beckons in the plush room, complete with an Arhaus Snugg Chair, cloud-colored Pottery Barn crib and cozy gray carpet. While drifting in and out of sleep, the child can catch a glimpse of a tear drop-style chandelier by PB Teen.
Boya decorated the custom built-ins with colorful accessories.
CHILD’S PLAY
Fun fact: playrooms don’t have to be a sea of scattered LEGOs and stuffed animals. For interior designer Emily Boya of Studio Em Design (studioem-design.com), they can be a stylish yet functional space that compliments the home’s aesthetic. One family with four children under the age of six knew a central room dedicated to play was not a desire but a necessity—and the result was a neutral-toned design layered with pops of color. A blue-speckled wallpaper by Peter Fasano compliments plush Serena & Lily Newport loungers. For additional seating and storage, Boya wrapped a custom window bench by Sewfine Workroom in washable linen Romo Linara fabric, ensuring inevitable spills would be a snap to rectify. “We created a variety of different seating options with the window bench seat to the low, less structured bean bags, which allows for flexibility in the space as the kids grow,” says Boya. Vibrant-hued Society 6 pillows tie the color palette together for a bright, youthful backdrop.
