Kate Kelley of Kate Kelley Designs
Rome wasn’t built in a day—nor was any thoughtfully designed space. A keen eye for interior design, respect for architecture and a talented team are a must. Kate Kelley Designs (katekelleydesigns.com) equips every client with this trifecta of talents and more. The founder of the Wellesley-based boutique interior architecture and design firm has two decades of working with top architecture and design firms, making her an ideal partner for clients seeking a balance of architecture and design. Here, Kelley reflects on her thoughtful approach to design.

How has your history of working for and with architects shaped you as an interior designer?
It’s given me a more detailed perspective on interiors. I am not only thinking about what we are adding to spaces but also how the interiors speak to the architecture, making sure they complement and balance each other out.
How does your experience make you a great partner for architects?
I have an extreme respect for architects and their experience and skill set. Understanding and respecting the processes of your professional peers certainly makes working together easier.

How does your approach ensure projects have a cohesive look?
Design is about the macro and micro details, and making sure attention is paid to these details. This is about scale, balance and all the design principles that build a great project.
How would you describe your team-focused approach to interior design?
Communication and collaboration among design professionals and project teams are key to creating a cohesive design. This helps the design process and the client interface as well.
Why is it important to respect a project’s design concept and surroundings?
The design concept or the “Parti” for a project is extremely important to its success. This helps teams, especially clients, make informed decisions and keep things moving in the right direction.
