In 2021, CHANEL became an Official Partner of the Festival Lumière, a key event in the world of heritage cinema, as both witness and conveyor of the memory of the seventh art.
The 13th edition will take place from October 9th to 17th 2021 in Lyon.
The House of CHANEL is supporting the masterclasses given by the guests of honor at the 2021 Festival Lumière and the Permanent History of Women Filmmakers program, which aims to rediscover the works of women who have made their mark on film history.

This year, a retrospective will be devoted to the director Kinuyo Tanaka, who was one of the greatest actresses in Japanese cinema before devoting herself to making feature films in the early 1950s.

CHANEL and cinema are all about elective affinities and a long-term conversation.
Gabrielle Chanel's career never ceased to touch the big screen, from the raincoat she chose for Michèle Morgan in Le Quai des brumes to the New Wave revolution that she dressed.
Her friendships with the greatest directors of her time, from Jean Cocteau and Robert Bresson to Jean Renoir and Luchino Visconti, and with the actresses she dressed both on and off-screen, including Marlene Dietrich, Jeanne Moreau, Romy Schneider, Jean Seberg, and Delphine Seyrig, are testament to her devotion to the medium.
Indeed, this highly inventive dialogue prefigured the evolution of the role of women in society by bringing about new femininity.
The relationship between these major art forms continued with Karl Lagerfeld, a veritable film enthusiast, and is enriched today by the impetus of Virginie Viard, Artistic Director of the Fashion collections.
Virginie began her career assisting the costume designer Dominique Borg in turning Isabelle Adjani into Bruno Nuytten's Camille Claudel.
Today, the emblematic actresses of world cinema such as Tilda Swinton, Penélope Cruz, Kristen Stewart, and Marion Cotillard, all ambassadors and friends of the House, continue to embody the creations of CHANEL.
Through its partnership with the Festival Lumière, CHANEL returns to the source of a shared history, all while strengthening its existing links with the world of cinema.
