Caleb Marshall on How Britney Spears Inspired The Fitness Marshall & How to Get in a Workout Every Day

By Jessica Bowne | March 20, 2017 | Lifestyle

It isn’t always easy to muster your way through a bland workout, but what if you could turn your fitness time into a dance party? Caleb Marshall, better known as The Fitness Marshall, launched his own brand of dance videos on YouTube to answer that question.

The high-energy Marshall is heading to Life Time Athletic MetroWest in Framingham (they’re opening a third location in Chestnut Hill soon) on March 26 for a 60-minute cardio hip-hop dance concert. We spoke with Marshall about getting in your workout every day and how he choreographs those over-the-top dances.

How do you pick the music for your fitness dance videos?
Caleb Marshall:
I only dance to music I love. If I don’t love the song, you’ll be able to tell on my face. I’m not good at faking things. I only move if it moves me.

Do you choreograph each video before you start or is it more free form?
CM:
I spend many hours choreographing each dance so that it is approachable enough for non-dancers and complex enough to interest veteran dancers.

What was your original inspiration for starting the Fitness Marshall? Did you set out to be a fitness icon?
CM:
I dreamed of being a pop star when I was younger. I literally thought my life calling was to be Britney Spears. I got to college and started teaching dance fitness classes for fun and realized my calling was to be the Richard Simmons version of Britney Spears. My senior year I threw some camo on and started the YouTube channel for fun. Within 8 months I had 100,000 subscribers.

How long does it take you to prep your video of the week?
CM:
It depends. I try not to set a schedule as I get discouraged. I also make sure to take a break anytime I get stuck choreographing because I will work myself all night and end up hating the song entirely if I don’t. Some songs are choreographed in 10 minutes, others 10 hours. I do not settle and always want to out-do myself. I know what I am capable of and what people expect of me, which is amazing but also a lot of pressure to put on myself.

We need to ask: How do you pick your backup dancers? We love their energy!
CM:
They’re all my close friends! Since I started the channel, I have only have my friends or family in videos. It keeps it real for me. In the past year that my channel started blowing up I asked two of my best friends, Bria and Haley, to be permanent Backup Booty’s and travel the world with me.

What can we expect from your work out at Life Time MetroWest?
CM:
Everything you see in the videos times 100,000 and with Life Time for an amazing backdrop. More dancing, more laughing, more outrageousness, and most importantly you can expect to be in a room full of people fully embracing themselves in the present moment just as they are. I am excited to bring a super fun and high energy concert to Life Time’s members and guests.

What should people keep in mind if they just have a short time to work out each day?
CM:
Do SOMETHING. Something is ALWAYS better than nothing.
