Your book connects women’s shoes with special moments. What was yours?

We would go to Nantucket. I spent a lot of time on Lady’s Beach. My dad was big into painting and would sit on the beach and paint while we played in the water. Leather moccasins were in fashion then. I wore them until they were just threads and beads.”

What are your favorite summer spots in New England?

We would camp out on the beaches in Westerly, R.I., all day and try to get as brown as possible. Also, I love Block Island. I was either in flip-flops or barefoot. I worked at the boathouse, kite store and Payne’s Dock. Nothing like a New England summer at the beach!
