Materials are everything in a home, and they’re especially important in a light-filled gourmet kitchen. A Milton family recently chose designer Susan Hayward (susanhaywardinteriors.com) to create a gilded and warm space, where cooking is as important as entertaining or simply hanging out. Hayward shares her insights about what makes this kitchen a master class in comfort and glam. And yes, the pooches are thrilled.
FRAMED IN BEAUTY
“The cabinets were sourced from Click Cabinets (clickcabinets.com). We selected elegant hardware from Top Knobs (topknobs.com) at Needham Decorative Hardware (decorativelocks.com),” says Hayward. For the backsplash, Hayward’s team chose a simple, arabesque polished tile from Bellew Tile and Marble (bellewtile.com) in Rockland, Mass. They also sourced the durable, easy-to-clean, tile plank flooring from Bellew. “To take advantage of the light-filled windows, we kept window treatments simple yet elegant,” says Hayward. “Lee Jofa fabric embellished with metallic thread and beads was used to create Roman shades. The fabric is available at the Boston Design Center (bostondesign.com).”
CREATIVE COUNTERS
For the countertops, “we chose a Vector stone quartz in Planet Mercury, which is a beautiful warm gray with crisp white veining—the island was set with an extra-thick top made of Venato Gold by Quartz Master (quartzmasters.com),” says Hayward. The 3-inch-thick island top was made to anchor the island and to create grounding for the Schonbek chandelier. All fabrication was done by RJJ Installation (rjjinstallation.com) of Norwood, Mass.
LOVELY LUMENS
The magnificant chandler from Schonbek (schonbek.com) was chosen as the centerpiece of the room," says Hayward. "Enhancing the effect of the in-ceiling while nodding to the traditional style of the home, this chandelier became the focal point of the design. The chandelier was sourced from Wolfers Lighting (wolfers.com) in Waltham, Mass."
HlGH/ART
'"This beautiful ceiling from American Tin Ceilings (americantinceilings.com) paired with tin moldings for uplighting was used to showcase the architectural detail of the kitchen," says Hayward.
DOG DAYS
“The dog dining table was custom created by our contractor JB Carpentry & Painting (jbcarpentrypainting.com) of Ashland, Mass., and it was fabricated by RJJ Installation,” says Hayward. “The RH (rh.com) dining table had just the perfect subtle detail along an apron that we loved. The finish and texture of the wood were comfortable enough for a breakfast nook but sophisticated enough to pair with the rest of the space. The washed-linen upholstered side chairs from RH were selected in blue to add some cool color into the room and a comfortable, stylish feel. For lighting, we selected Nick Alain (nickalain.com) pendants to create a custom chandelier above the table. We love the romantic design and delicate nature of these pendants, and we felt that it looked lovely against the wallpaper.” Finally, Hayward’s team chose Cabaret wallpaper (Antonina Vella Deco collection) from York Wallcoverings (yorkwallcoverings.com). “We chose this because of its glamorous feel and soft metallics that paired beautifully next to the vibrant tin ceiling,” she says.
