Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol comes to Emerson Cutler Majestic Theatre.
Will Lyman will play Ebenezer Scrooge in the production.
Steven Maler, Commonwealth Shakespeare Company’s (commshakes.org) founding artistic director, muses on their production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, which runs from Dec. 8 to Dec. 22.
What about this production is most exciting for you? To come together as a community, to experience great literature and great theater and to be reminded of the urgent need for all of us to care for those less fortunate is deeply inspiring to me and all of us at CSC.
What makes Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carolone of CSC’s most ambitious undertakings?A Christmas Carol is such an ambitious project because we see it as a total theatrical experience—great writing, acting and design—but also extraordinary music and dancing. We’re creating a bounty of holiday joy, pulling out all the stops to make this experience magical and transformative for our audiences.
What can attendees expect from Will Lyman’s interpretation of Scrooge? Will Lyman is truly one of Boston’s greatest theatrical talents. I know his Scrooge will be as unique and complex as all of his performances across the many stages of Boston. I cannot think of a better performer to have in this seminal role.
How do you hope audience members will feel after watching the show? I hope audiences leave the theater recommitted to the urgent need for empathy and the civic responsibility to celebrate the best in all of us. A Christmas Carol is fundamentally a story about caring for others, recognizing the many blessings we all have and that family—however each of us defines that—is foundational to the joy of life.
