5 Ways To Volunteer Virtually

Alejandra Arevalo and Emma Jackson | April 27, 2020 | Lifestyle National

In these unprecedented times, there are many opportunities to help others from home and give back virtually.

Be My Eyes
The free mobile app connects blind and low-vision individuals with sighted volunteers and companies through a live video call. Every day, volunteers sign onto Be My Eyes (bemyeyes.com) to lend their sight for challenges such as reading notices and navigating new surroundings.

American Red Cross
Digital volunteers for the American Red Cross (redcrosschat.org) help monitor online conversations with those affected by the coronavirus and share resources on social media. These digital heroes work in four-hour shifts and just need access to a computer and basic social media knowledge.

L.A. Works
The non-profit organization offers many resources on ways to volunteer virtually. L.A. Works (laworks.com) opportunities include making phone calls to elderly who are at risk of losing housing and guide them to the appropriate city resources that protect renters. Volunteers need access to a computer, internet and a phone.

UN Volunteers
Through any device with an internet connection, this online volunteering program allows non-profit organizations and volunteers to work together to address global challenges from anywhere in the world. UN Volunteers (onlinevolunteering.org) can work in areas such as writing, translating, researching, among others.

VolunteerMatch
The online database provides a variety of remote volunteer listings, including many in response to the coronavirus. At VolunteerMatch (volunteermatch.org), can filter opportunities by location and category, which include advocacy and human rights, crisis support and environment. Opportunities listed include becoming a graphic designer for advocacy organizations, working as a teaching fellow for youth at risk and being a fundraising assistant.
